Transition into Spring
Posted by Beth on 3/1/2011
The transition from winter to spring is my favorite. For those of us on the east coast, this winter has been especially brutal, so the brighter sun and warmer temperatures can’t come soon enough. But from a style standpoint, the weather change can be a bit tricky. With the right approach and accessories, however, you won't have to resort to pulling out your flip flops and calling it your "spring transition."

The flirty mantra, as you’ve heard, is to start with a straightforward yet chic foundation. You know we love jeans, and this season we are thrilled to see wide leg jeans take the place of skinny jeans. Do I hear cries of joy? Thought so. What’s cooler than a pair of bell bottoms with a leather woven belt? Doesn’t it just make you think of the 70’s and Charlie’s Angels? What a cool decade – who remembers pet rocks, mood rings, Bonnie Bell lip smackers?? Anyone with me here?

Anyway, I digress, but bell bottoms really do exude flirtiness. Go for a lighter, spring-appropriate wash, and remember fit and cut are the most important…no trend works if it doesn’t fit your body. If the wide leg doesn't work for you - you can't go wrong with boot cut jeans...ever.

Another great spring transition style that you will see everywhere is the maxi skirt.  I love this look as it can be casual and comfortable to fit a mom’s life, and it is a chic alternative to jeans. Shorter skirts have their place, but can you really chase after kids or change a diaper in a micro mini?

Pair your jeans or maxi skirt with an open-knit sweater and breathe life into the look with some cool add-ons. A lightweight scarf in a beautiful spring hue will keep you warm and on-trend while a pair of the great platform wedges in stores now will literally take you to the next level. Still have snow on the ground? Both the jeans and maxi skirt will look great with your favorite boots.

Jewelry is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to completely change an outfit. A colorful stone necklace for example, would help brighten up a winter outfit and make it feel more springy. What about some dangly statement earrings with a simple neutral outfit for a little extra interest? Or try some sparkly bangles and a chunky turquoise ring. Don’t be afraid to experiment and get out of your comfort zone. For under $50 you can find funky jewelry that will truly put a spring in your step and erase any memory of the 50 snow days we had this year.

Finally, since the weather is a little unpredictable this time of year, you can take measures to stay cozy by having your trusty flirty wrap handy to wear as a shawl or a scarf depending on your mood and the temp. Heck, this number works overtime and serves this purpose every season of the year. If you don’t have one, you don’t know what you’re missing.

It’s been a long winter all wrapped up in our woolen cocoons. It’s time to emerge the beautiful butterfly that you are. Go ahead. Find your inner flirt.
